The 3rd National Training of Y-PEER Nepal was held at Nepalgunj, Banke from 18th Sept.- 22 Sept. 2011. The 3rd ToT was organized to enhance the skills of peer educators from the Western, Mid-Western and Far-Western Development region of the country. The ToT was facilitated by Y-PEER Nepal Focal point-in-charge Shubha Kayastha and Focal points Sagar Budhathoki and Sangeet Kayastha. It was a great platform for peer educators of different districts to gather at a common place to share their unique local experiences that was very much relevant in the training. The main objective of the training was to build capacity of selected group of trainers to delivery high quality peer education programs. The training was very useful to learn methodologies and to acquire and share accurate information about Reproductive Health and sexual health issues, including HIV&AIDS Discuss own attitudes and values regarding Sexual Reproductive Health (SRH) and HIV &AIDS, as well as health education. The training methodology was very youthful which helped the participants to participate actively and express their values and attitudes regarding some sensitive issues very positively. The training was able to add one more batch of certified trainers in the Y-PEER family helping to strengthen the network even better.
The 2nd National ToT of Y-PEER Nepal was organized at Budol Training Center, Banepa from 10th to 14th September. The 2nd ToT was targeted to the peer educators from Eastern and Central Development Region .There were 25 participants from these regions who represented different organizations in the ToT. The ToT was facilitated by Y-PEER Nepal Focal point-in-charge Shubha Kayastha and Focal points Sagar Budhathoki and Sangeet Kayastha. The main objective of the training was to enhance the capacity of the peer educators who are working on various issues at different organization so that they can contribute back to their organizations the skills and knowledge gained from the training. The training was highly useful for all the peer educators as it was a common platform for different youths working in sectors such as SRH, HIV & AIDS, drugs, children, uterine prolapse, early marriage etc. to share their experiences with each other and learn among themselves. The training was very youthful as with the Y-PEER theme edutainment, a mix of education and entertainment which focuses in imparting skills and knowledge through simplified and very youthful methodology. The training was able to produce 25 more Y-PEER certified peer educators who are actively working in their organizations and sharing the skills learned from the Y-PEER training.
The 2nd Asia-Pacific Y-PEER Advanced Training of Trainers was held at Bangkok, Thailand from 15th – 21st August. The ToT was attended by 29 participants from 10 countries and facilitated by 5 trainers and co-trainers from the region. Sagar Budhathoki and Sangeet Gopal Kayastha represented Nepal in the training as participants and Shubha Kayastha as one of the Co-Trainer. The major objective of the workshop was to build capacity of selected group of trainers to delivery high quality peer education programs. After the training, the participants got the status of Focal Points which allows them to conduct National ToT in their country.
Y-PEER Nepal celebrated International Youth Day in collaboration with Association of Youth Organization of Nepal (AYON). AYON had organized an event “Youth Café” in association with various youth organizations. The concept of youth café was to allocate tables to different organizations where there would be discussions on various issues that is important among youths and which needs to be addressed by the youth themselves. Y-PEER Nepal had taken responsibility of one of the table with the theme “Youth and Sexual and Reproductive Health”(SRH). Shubha Kayastha, Y-PEER Nepal FPC took role of facilitator for the program. The table was full of youths working on various issues with most of them having some sort of knowledge on SRH issues. The discussion was done starting from the basic components of SRH and it was followed by experience sharing by youths who have been working for SRH especially for youths. There were 2-3 case studies that were discussed which clearly identified the problems faced by the youths. The important discussion was on the sexual orientation session where the confusion among youths about the sexual minorities was made clear. There were confusion among participants regarding the sexual status of sexual minorities such as gay, lesbian etc. The 2nd half of the day was followed by new discussion among new participants as the table was rotated as per the idea of the event. The new group was also given information on SRH and the role of youth to uplift the SRH Rights of the youths. The program was followed by refreshment and informal discussion among the youths.
10 Days of Activism (DoA), a global campaign that focused on raisingawareness among young people and society on the issue of young people’sSexual and Reproductive Health and rights (SRHR) and needs was successfullyorganized in Nepal by Y-PEERNepal along with more than 45 countries. Y-PEER, a youth to youth initiative, is a global network that has beenworking on the issue of young people's SRHR since last 10 years is aninitiation of UNFPA, UNAIDS, FHI, Youth Net and other organizations .
The 10 DoA campaign was a collaborative effort with different otherorganizations including; Family Planning Association of Nepal, ParichayaSamaj, SOLID Nepal, SAC Nepal, Youth information centers at Bhaktapur and Rupendehi, GAA, YES Nepal, Rotaract mid-town, Nepal Family DevelopmentFoundation, United Hands for Social Development and Amnesty InternationalBhaktapur youth network and had coverage in many parts of the country.
The entire activities were basically targeted to young girls and boys andthe campaign is an effort to advocate among the policy makers. Activities carried out mostly by young people in partnership with adults with the emphasis to the concept of Edu-tainment (Education and Entertainment) to make it more youth-friendly, which included street drama, documentary show, workshops, interaction and orientations related to SRHR issue of young people, Human rights, Sexual and gender minorities and Drug abuse.
Y-PEER Kathmandu in coordination in other organization screened adocumentary ‘*Outside the news room’ *followed by an interaction programrelated to traditional abortion practices in the far-west Nepal andvulnerable sexual and reproductive health of young people, in the group ofmore than 95 young people. An *orientation on HIV and AIDS conducted amongyoung drug users* had participation of altogether 48 young people boys from the locality which was organized by Rupendehi Youth information forum atButwal. In another interesting program by Bhaktapur youth information center, there was *parents-youth interaction* about the physical and mental changes in young people, parents expressed their experience and discussionwas made how they could help their young children. Young girls of Bhaktapur also had an outreach work with 24 young carpet factory women about *menstrual hygiene and alternative sanitary napkins*. NFDF had *interaction with rural youth *about their SRH needs and problems in the district of Sindupalchowk.
Parichaya Samaj, a non-governmental organization working on the issue of gender and sexual minorities, showed a *street drama* to advocate on their working area. A group of young people affiliated to Amnesty International Bhaktapur youth network, conducted an *orientation on Universal Declarationon Human Rights *with the use of videos and discussion. SOLID Nepal, working in the SRH issue conducted a five-days *training on Peer education *to young peer educators so that, they can reach their friends in their community for awareness on sexual and reproductive health and rights. There was few moresimilar program facilitated by young people in some other parts of the country as well.
The campaign has proven to be one of the highlight for this International year of Youth (IYY), not just in Nepal but globally. This campaign in the context of Nepal is also an example of collaborative effort of many hands for a single cause. With the closing of the campaign, there has been ashared notion that, still there are lots of works to be done for betterment of SRH of young people. Therefore, more heart, head and hand are to be mobilized in a collaborative and partnership approach to reach the goal of improving health of young people and make them able to access the health services.
Call for Applications- Y-PEER National Training of Trainers 2011

Y-PEER (Youth Peer Education Network), a global network, is a groundbreaking and comprehensive youth-to-youth initiative pioneered by UNFPA in 2001. Y-PEER aims to promote a healthy life style through peer to peer approach and to empower young people to make responsible decisions. Y-PEER Nepal, part of
global network started in December 2010 in the country is being supported by Family Planning Association of Nepal (FPAN) as a secretariat and UNFPA.
Y-PEER Nepal announces a call for applications for three simultaneous national level training of trainers on peer education for peer educators (between 16-24 years of age) around the country working on Adolescents and young people’s sexual and reproductive health including HIV and AIDS, and Most at risk young people (MARYP). Around 80 peer educators will be trained in the three trainings that will be organized during May to August 2011.
Cost
Organizers will bear cost of selected participants including travelling and accomodation.
Criteria for applicants
1. Must be between the age of 16 to 24 years of age;
2. Must be affiliated to an organization working in the areas of ASRH, HIV/AIDS and MARYPs,
3. At least one year of experience working as a peer educator;
4. Residing inside the country;
5. Basic understanding on young people’s sexual and reproductive health;
6. Must be able to communicate in basic English;
7. Able to represent his/her organization and specific development region and district.

To apply for the trainings, you must fill up the application form (attached along with the mail, send copies of an updated Curriculum Vitae (C.V) and recommendation letter (including your achievements and involvements) from your organization by post or email before 30th April, 2011. Selection would be done on the submitted documents which may or may not involve interview. The selected participants would be notified via email or telephone.
