Advance Training of Trainers  , Thailand.

UNFPA and YPEER are preparing for the 3rd Asia Pacific Y-PEER Training of Trainers, to be held in May 31st to June 6th  2012. The training will be held at the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in Bangkok, Thailand.

Application Call for 4th National TOT
Y-PEER Nepal is planning to a call applications for 4th National training of trainers on peer education for peer educators (between 16-24 years of age) from Eastern development region in the country, working on Adolescents and young people’s sexual and reproductive health including HIV and AIDS, and Most at risk young people (MARYP).

Valentine day- safer sex campaign 2012
Y-PEER Nepal requests all the young people to share us with your love messages, quotes, poem, gajals, songs , etc in our email address (ie. ypeer.nepal@gmail.com). These things can directly be sent to us via comments on our facebook page and blog post related to valentine day posting. We will publish all these things in our official website and will share this to the people around the world via internet.

Y-PEER Nepal was successful in launching following programs in the year 2011:


Valentine Day Safer Sex Campaign:

Y-PEER Nepal initiated Valentine Day Safer Sex Campaign through online forum to promote responsible sexual behavior among young people. Online posters were designed keeping in mind the youthful essence and of love and sexuality. The posters were posted in various online platform like facebook and blogs and it was also sent through email to all the member organizations, partners, youth organizations, youth networks etc. It was hugely promoted through facebook as most of the young people have access to it and the campaign was appreciated by the youths for its modality of no funding activity but giving a very strong message and creating awareness.



SRH Glossary:

“SRH Shabdakosh-A Sexual and Reproductive Health Glossary in English and Nepali” is a compilation of works related to sexual and reproductive health issues published by Shtrii Shakti under the auspices of UNPFA Nepal. The book has been published to ensure a common understanding and use of the vocabulary on SRH issues among stakeholders. Y-PEER Nepal was involved as one of the collaborating organization providing useful comments and suggestions in the course of compiling the list of words.

10 days of Activism:

10 Days of Activism (DOA), a global campaign that focused on raising awareness among young people and society on the issue of young people’s Sexual and Reproductive Health and rights (SRHR) and needs was successfully organized in Nepal by Y-PEER Nepal along with more than 45 countries from July 1-10. The 10 DoA campaign in Nepal was a collaborative effort with different other organizations including; Family Planning Association of Nepal, Parichaya Samaj, SOLID Nepal, SAC Nepal, Youth information centers at Bhaktapur and Rupendehi, GAA, YES Nepal, Rotaract mid-town, Nepal Family Development Foundation, United Hands for Social Development and Amnesty International Bhaktapur youth network and had coverage in many parts of the country.
The entire activities were basically targeted to young girls and boys and the campaign is an effort to advocate among the policy makers.  Activities carried out mostly by young people in partnership with adults with the emphasis to the concept of Edu-tainment (Education and Entertainment) to make it more youth-friendly, which included street drama, documentary show, workshops, interaction and orientations related to SRHR issue of young people, Human rights, Sexual and gender minorities and Drug abuse. The campaign within the International year of Youth (IYY), proved to be an example of collaborative effort of many hands for a single cause.

Advanced ToT:
The 2nd Asia-Pacific Y-PEER Advanced Training of Trainers was held at Bangkok, Thailand from 15th – 21st August. The ToT was attended by 29 participants from 10 countries and facilitated by 5 trainers and co-trainers from the region. Sagar Budhathoki and Sangeet Gopal Kayastha represented Nepal in the training as participants and Shubha Kayastha as one of the Co-Trainer. The major objective of the workshop was to build capacity of selected group of trainers to delivery high quality peer education programs. After the training, the participants got the status of Focal Points which allows them to conduct National ToT in their country.
International Youth Day 2012:
Y-PEER Nepal celebrated International Youth Day in collaboration with Association of Youth Organization of Nepal (AYON). AYON had organized an event “Youth Café” in association with various youth organizations. The concept of youth café was to allocate tables to different organizations where there would be discussions on various issues that is important among youths and which needs to be addressed by the youth themselves. Y-PEER Nepal had taken responsibility of one of the table with the theme “Youth and Sexual and Reproductive Health”(SRH). Shubha Kayastha, Y-PEER Nepal FPC took role of facilitator for the program. The table was full of youths working on various issues with most of them having some sort of knowledge on SRH issues. The discussion was done starting from the basic components of SRH and it was followed by experience sharing by youths who have been working for SRH especially for youths. There were 2-3 case studies that were discussed which clearly identified the problems faced by the youths. The important discussion was on the sexual orientation session where the confusion among youths about the sexual minorities was made clear. There were confusion among participants regarding the sexual status of sexual minorities such as gay, lesbian etc. The 2nd half of the day was followed by new discussion among new participants as the table was rotated as per the idea of the event. The new group was  also given information on SRH and the role of youth to uplift the SRH Rights of the youths. The program was followed by refreshment and informal discussion among the youths.

2nd National ToT:
The 2nd National ToT of Y-PEER Nepal was organized at Budol Training Center, Banepa from  10th to 14th September. The 2nd ToT was targeted to the peer educators from Eastern and Central Development Region .There were 25 participants from these regions who represented different organizations in the ToT. The ToT was facilitated by Y-PEER Nepal Focal point-in-charge Shubha Kayastha and Focal points Sagar Budhathoki and Sangeet Kayastha. The main objective of the training was to enhance the capacity of the peer educators who are working on various issues at different organization so that they can contribute back to their organizations the skills and knowledge gained from the training. The training was highly useful for all the peer educators as it was a common platform for different youths working in sectors such as SRH, HIV & AIDS, drugs, children, uterine prolapse, early marriage etc. to share their experiences with each other and learn among themselves. The training was very youthful as with the Y-PEER theme edutainment, a mix of education and entertainment which focuses in imparting skills and knowledge through simplified and very youthful methodology. The training was able to produce 25 more Y-PEER certified peer educators who are actively working in their organizations and sharing the skills learned from the Y-PEER training.

3rd National ToT:
The 3rd National Training of Y-PEER Nepal was held at Nepalgunj, Banke from 18th Sept.- 22 Sept. 2011. The 3rd ToT was organized to enhance the skills of peer educators from the Western, Mid-Western and Far-Western Development region of the country. The ToT was facilitated by Y-PEER Nepal Focal point-in-charge Shubha Kayastha and Focal points Sagar Budhathoki and Sangeet Kayastha. It was a great platform for peer educators of different districts to gather at a common place to share their unique local experiences that was very much relevant in the training. The main objective of the training was to build capacity of selected group of trainers to delivery high quality peer education programs. The training was very useful to learn methodologies and to acquire and share accurate information about Reproductive Health and sexual health issues, including HIV&AIDS Discuss own attitudes and values regarding Sexual Reproductive Health (SRH) and HIV &AIDS, as well as health education. The training methodology was very youthful which helped the participants to participate actively and express their values and attitudes regarding some sensitive issues very positively. The training was able to add one more batch of certified trainers in the Y-PEER family helping to strengthen the network even better.
Partnership with Restless Development:
Y-PEER Nepal strengthened its relation with its member organizations and it also signed a MoU with Restless Development for joint collaboration and partnership. Various meetings were held over a course of time to figure out the level of partnership as Y-PEER is a youth network and Restless is an established organization. The partnership had already started before signing the MoU as there was participation from both the organizations in each other’s trainings. Recently a partnership work has been initiated for the Y-PEER ToT Manual translation into Nepali language. THE translation work is in progress and though it is Y-PEER Manual, joint collaboration will be done to produce a nepali version of the manual with equal ownership of both Y-PEER and Restless.
7 billion Campaigns:
On the United Nations Day, Y-PEER Nepal actively participated on the event hosted by United Nation. Stalls of different UN agencies displaying and distributing IEC materials were placed on the event, including theatre shows. Y-PEER Nepal handled the stall of UNFPA, utilizing the platform for 7 billion campaigns. Y-PEER members and invitees also benefited from the stalls of other UN agencies.  Visitors on the stalls had few areas of involvement. Major attraction was to make them write up ‘What 7 billion means to you?’ in a chart and taking their pictures handling their quotes/ messages. Then they were gifted with 7 billion t-shirt and notebooks, supported by UNFPA CO. The charts were later pasted around the stalls.The stall was decorated with different information materials related to 7 billion information and colour balloons to make it look more youth friendly.
Y-PEER Nepal Annual Planning Meeting:
Y-PEER Nepal Annual Planning Meeting was held at Budol Training Center Banepa from 15-16 November 2011. The main objective of this meeting was to gather all the regional coordinators and core team members to do the reflection of the program and activities held in the 2011 and to do strategic planning for the year 2012.The first day of the planning meeting was focused on activities such as  expectation collection, team building and visionary exercises. There were special sessions on topic such as network and its importance and organizational structure. The discussion on the importance of network was very important as Y-PEER is itself a network and it very important to discuss on its sustainability. The session on organizational structure made clear about the present structure of Y-PEER Nepal and planning was done to improve the structure. It was followed by discussions on the challenges faced by the focal points and regional coordinators. The 2nd day of the meeting was focused on strategic planning for the year 2012. The information was given regarding the Y-PEER International Plan 2012 and discussion were hled for the National Action Plan 2012. There were special sessions regarding the reporting format, media and communication and celebration of Advocacy days by Y-PEER.


World AIDS Day 2011 Celebration:
WAD 2011 was extensively celebrated by Y-PEER Nepal throughout the country with the theme, “Getting to Zero”. It was celebrated in every development region of Nepal including the capital city. In Kathmandu, a stall was kept at Bhaktapur Durbar Square with different IEC materials kept in it. Earlier in the morning a rally went through the local community. Y-PEER Nepal in collaboration with other local organizations had organized the program. A short video on HIV & AIDS awareness made by Y-PEER Nepal was also screened at UWTC, Tripureshowr and also at Times Square Mall, Durbarmarg. The regional network of Y-PEER Nepal successfully organized various programs all over Nepal to celebrate the WAD 2011. Different street dramas were organized in Pokhara, Kailali, Nepalgunj which was hugely participated by huge number of young people. A rally along with Talk program and video screening was held at Illam municipality. A similar talk program and workshop on the role of youth in minimizing HIV & AIDS was also held at Pokhara. Altogether, WAD 2011 was successfully celebrated by all the regional network of Y-PEER Nepal including the capital city, Kathmandu.

Let’s Talk about Sex:
Y-PEER Nepal celebrated 16 days of Activism by organizing an event “Let’s Talk about Sex” in collaboration with Story Cycle on 4th December 2011 at Adarsha Kanya School, Patan. The main objective of this event was to provide a platform for youths to freely express their belief, values and attitudes related to sex and sexuality. The event was designed with discussion sessions with speakers and video show with directors. The main speaker for the day was Dr. Rajendra Bhadra with the theme “Art, Culture, Sculpture and Sex” where the discussion was done viewing sex and sexuality from the Eastern Philosophy and from the perspective of Nepali culture and religion. Dr. Bhadra briefly discussed on the importance of sex and sexuality and its  need among youths especially in perspective from Nepali culture. Participants were able to freely express their values and attitudes regarding the topic due to to the easy facilitation of Dr. Bhadra. The next theme was Sexual minorities and HIV related stigma and discrimination. Ms.Bhoomika Shrestha from Parichaya Samaj and Ms. Pooja Ghale were speakers for this session. Ms. Bhoomika briefly discussed on the status of sexual minorities group in Nepal and the problems faced by them regarding their rights and identification. Ms. Ghale shared a case study of a women regarding HIV related stigma and discrimination. Apart from the discussions, 3 short videos with theme such as HIV awareness, stigma and discrimination, Sex and Sexuality were also screened in the program. The event was followed by refreshment and informal discussions.



Capacity Building of Youth Organizations
As a part of capacity building training, AYON and Y-PEER jointly organized national level training program for AYON and Y-PEER members from all across the nation. The training was taught by Organization Development Center (ODC) in a Package itself and provided all the required technical support. The programme aimed to enhance the participants’ knowledge and skills on project management, proposal writing and report writing. The first training on Proposal and Report writing was held at Kakani from participants 28th Nov- 2nd Dec. 2011. There were a total of 30 participants participating in the training. The 2nd training was also held on proposal and report writing at Chitwan from 12th Dec.-16th Dec. 2011 where 38 youth organization’s representatives participated. The final training on Project Cycle Management was held at Nagarkot from 18 Dec. - 22 Dec. 2011. 35 participants had participated in this program. The training was a great platform for representatives of both Y-PEER and AYON to share each other’s experiences and learn from each other. There were many participants who were from the same district and region so this training was an opportunity to know more people and their ideas and experiences.
